Mentoring is a two-way street

Time is always in short supply for entrepreneurs so having an extra person tackling the big problems with you is invaluable, especially when that someone brings years of expertise and a wealth of connections.

At JOLT, FlyerFlo was fortunate enough to have had not just one, but an entire team of business leaders who want to see us succeed. They included senior executives from global media companies to billion-dollar venture capital firms, each of whom generously offered time from their busy schedules to help guide us through our challenges.

The advice we received was incredible, but a lesson we discovered was that mentorship isn’t a one way street. One might expect miracles upon being handed such a phenomenal team of advisors, but the truth is nobody can read minds. It is up to the team to tell the mentors what its specific business problems is so they can best position themselves to help.

In the end, the assistance from our mentors was indispensable but that was built on a foundation of commitment and hard work from both sides. So while having that extra help to tackle those big problems can be extremely beneficial, it’s certainly no excuse to sit back and relax.
