Who you hire can make or break a startup

Hiring is always a tough decision. As a fashion technology startup, Stylekick’s success is greatly determined by the team’s ability to learn, innovate and implement in a very short amount of time. In an environment such as JOLT, one day is as valuable as an entire week.

We are always on the lookout for motivated people who will thrive in this type of environment. Even with a resumé in-hand and an interview, it can still be tricky to find the best people who will work well within the team. A bad hire can mean a lot of wasted time and resources.

So far we have been lucky finding talented people who are able to learn quickly and independently. Our last intern taught herself Photoshop within three days and began learning front-end code to assist us where it mattered. Those are the kind of people that can make or break any startup. They are also the kind of people we look for when expanding our team because they make the tough decisions a little more manageable.

Our JOLT mentors come from a variety of  backgrounds and have a wealth of knowledge across industry, technical, and strategic fields. Which means we are able to get very different perspectives from each mentor when tackling a problem. It not only helps us make a better-rounded decision but it also exposes us to perspectives we may never have thought of. In the rare case our mentors cannot help us, they are always more than willing to put us in contact with someone in their network that can.
